In Mark and in Luke, Jesus tells his disciples to take up the cross and follow him. At the second station, we have Jesus practicing what he preaches. Jesus does not shrink from the responsibility of bearing his own instrument of death. He carries it, knowing the meaning he is loading on to this instrument. He carries it for his disciples. He carries it for his friends, he carries it even for those who have condemned him. He carries the cross for us.
