Jesus has some help to get up the Golgotha Hill Hill. Simon of Cyrene bears the cross for a few moments. The Bible doesn’t tell us who he is or why he picks up the cross, but this moment and salvation history is so important. Earlier in his ministry, Jesus tells his disciples to take up that cross and follow him. Here, in this moment, when Jesus is bearing his cross, another helps to bear for him. When we who follow Jesus have crosses to bear, we are not alone. God puts people in our life to carry some of the weight for us. And when that is not enough, Jesus bears it, as well. Ultimately, we are going to fall short, but Jesus will not. More than that, he includes us on this journey. He didn't try to prove he could do it all by himself. He let us be a part of this amazing work of God's glorious redemption.
